9 Lessons I Learned Becoming 29

Typically my birthday preparations revolve around which place I’m choosing to have to dinner and which club to hit afterwards. This year (like most others I’m sure), I find myself reflecting about my life, where I am, and who I want to be.

I wish I could say that I’ve reached an age where I figured it all out. But I guess that’s the beauty of life. It’s a constant cycle of emotions, learning, unlearning. All we can really do is live life everyday.

I’ve reflected on pieces of lessons that became a part of me.

  1. You will not be able to absorb and enjoy the greatest moments in life if you have not fully healed or become comfortable with yourself.
  2. Everyone gets pressured to be ‘someone’, but people will find you most interesting when you just be yourself.
  3. Life is getting short. As we are getting older, seriously just do what makes you happy.
  4. This story on Stan Lee: “I told my wife, Joanie, ‘I’m going to quit.’ But she said: ‘Why not write it the way you want to write it? If it doesn’t work, what’s the worst that can happen?”
  5. Support yourself like how you support your friends.
  6. It takes a village. There is no award for doing it alone. Ask for and accept help.
  7. “Smarty had a party, and no one came.”
  8. Do not be distracted by the ideals of success or the success of others.
  9. “The purpose of life is to discover your gift. The meaning of life is to give your gift away.”
